Following your passion seems to be a common catch cry these days, and is mentioned by at least one speaker at every event I attend. What do they actually mean when they say this? Surely it can’t be as simple as doing something you love? Not quite. Sorry.

While following your passion does mean finding something to do in an area that you really enjoy, it’s more involved than that. For most people the hard part isn’t actually identifying what they’re passionate about, but narrowing it down to something they can make money from. Doing some research is how you choose which passion has the biggest following and so is more likely to make more money.

There’s a number of different ways you can easily find your passion. Here are 3 of my favourites:

  1. Finish this sentence – “If time and money were no object, and I could be, do, or have anything I wanted, how would I spend my time…?” Write down everything that comes into your mind no matter how small or silly it might seem.
  2. Take Janet Bray Attwood’s passion test.
  3. Go to your book shelf and see what theme/genre is most common among the books you have. Is there any topic you have more than one book about?

Now you have an idea of where your passions lie, you can use them to find your area of expertise. Your area of expertise is simply a topic that you know more about than the average person. It’s also where you bring your skills, talents and gifts into play along with the knowledge and experience you’ve acquired around your passion.

This is what helps you to stand out from the crowd by allowing you to put your own unique stamp on an area that may have lots of competition. A classic example of this is the weight loss industry.

There are hundreds of diets out there all slightly different from the next. Each one was created by someone following their passion to look and feel better. They relied on their skills, talents and area of expertise to get them the results they were after.

Remember, no one else in the world has the exact same combination of life purpose, skills, talents, knowledge, and experiences as you. Find a way to use that to your advantage. In the meantime, start thinking about how you can apply your skills, talents and gifts to your passion. The next part in the series will be about choosing the right business model for you.
